English, Scottish, French, Boston, New York, Australian, Spanish, it doesn’t matter. A guy with an accent makes my heart go all wibbley-wobbley. I love the sound of rolling Rs, “Aye” instead of “Yeah,” or “mate” instead of “bro.” To me, an accent plants the promise of far off places and romantic adventures in my head.
I especially have a thing for a Scottish brogue. Can you say Ewan McGregor? Or James McAvoy?
Or how about those Aussies like Chris Hemsworth?
I could go on and on, from country to country, city to city, but I’d like to analyze this a little. When I started formulating this blog post in my head, the immediate question I asked myself was, “Why?” Why do I love guys with accents? It’s not an uncommon thing among people, but I wanted to know why did I specifically find it attractive. So, who was the first guy with an accent I had a crush on? The answer, which is usually the answer to any question when it comes to my formative years, has to do with The Princess Bride.
Oh, Westley…
Cary Elwes has this wonderfully perfect English accent so even when he’s being rude or sarcastic, it comes off as proper and polite. The Dread Pirate Roberts was dashing, mysterious, clever, and undeniably handsome. Because of him, I spent a lot of my life thinking all British men were like this; fairytale heroes who could swoop in at any time to save the day.
Unfortunately, living in small town Louisiana does not afford one the opportunity to meet many guys with foreign accents. A country twang, yes, a French accent, no. (I’m not complaining too much, though. I met the man of my dreams right here in this small town, so…) I did have a Scottish friend once and I didn’t even know he was Scottish until he told me. He said he had learned to turn it off so Americans could understand him better. Don’t do this, fellas! Use that accent to your advantage!
Liking accents so much has led me to want to write a hero with one. Concerning that, the general consensus is not to over do it. Maybe describe the accent once or twice then keep it to regular words, throwing in hints throughout the story, maybe. Phonetically spelling out every word that character might say differently can get distracting for the reader.
How about you? What’s your favorite accent or guy or girl with an accent? Do accents turn you off? Have you had any experience with writing an accent? Are there any authors you know of who’ve done it well? Comment away!

I love guys with accents!! I think Chris Hemsworth is one of my current favorites!! I totally agree with Cary Elwes though. I watch The Princess Bride at least once a month!!
Awesome. I love me some EntangledTeen authors!!!
Australian accents . . . oh yes. *fans self*
Oh Wesley! My first love. I used to borrow that movie from the library over and over I had it memorized before I was ten.
I love accents too. The Irish one makes me giggle. I’m not a big fan of Quebecois though- living in Ottawa for six years, I heard a lot of it.
James McAvoy and Ewan McGregor *swoons* 😀
Love the British & Austrialian accents. There is just something about them where, even in a novel, it just works!
I love Scottish and Irish accents. They just make me melt.
I love accents! Gotta agree with Cary Elwes. And Chris Hemsworth. *swoon*
Oh Westley! Guys with accents (and guys in kilts) are so sexy!
*swoon* Guys with accents are just great aren’t they? Seriously, I have no idea what it is but they just make my heart flutter – especially British ones, haha!
However, an accent can’t make up for a horrible personality, unfortunately (in writing or real life)! Also, personally when reading I like a few slang terms thrown in here and there, but if everything is written phonetically to depict a character with an accent, well, it makes reading that book 10x harder for me!
Love the new blog. Thanks for the giveaway!
I’m so there. I’m particularly fond of David Tennant’s accent. 🙂 One book that did accent’s really well was Anna and the French Kiss. Oh, Etienne… 🙂
Yes, this girl loves a good accent, too. My first accent crush was Australian, Jim Craig from “The Man From Snowy River.” He was so dreamy. And watching him ride that horse off the cliff. Well. I’m swooning now.
Great post, Leah. And the blog is looking great! Congrats, Entangled!!
My family loves Man From Snowy River! Gotta love that accent!
I absolutely loved Cary Elwes too! Oh, I STILL love him in The Cat Returns as Baron Humbert Von Jikkigen. Sigh, even in Saw he was the perfect doctor.
🙂 oodles of love for scottish accents…and….any accent really haha!
Three words: Armitage and Fassbender.
Aussie and Brit accents make me swoon. Welsh accents make me giggle. Boston accents don’t sound too much like accents (my mother grew up in New England). Safe to say I have as much of an obsession with accents as Leah!
Love accents. Best one I read recently was in the SHADE series by Jerri Smith-Ready. A nice Scottish accent. Yum!
Congrats on the new Entangled Teen blog! It looks great.
My favorite guy with an accent from fiction is James Fraser from the OUTLANDER series.
Accents… *dreamy sigh* Give me an Irish accent any day and I’m a happy puppy!
Had a friend in college who was South African by way of Greece and had a beautiful voice that women fell in love with. Unfortunately, the voice didn’t fit the body. He did have women propose to him on the phone though.
As for writing accents, I’ve messed around with it on a Fantasy story and people warned me about over-doing it and some even commented that it was difficult to read at times. I think a little bit is a good idea, but definitely be careful.
I remember Hagrid from Harry Potter had an accent, but I don’t remember if Rowling wrote it in or if my perception of it is from the actor who portrayed him. I’ll have to look it up.
Jason Statham! His accent along with his body is gorgeous! Love him.
WOW! Great prize!
Oooh, All my FAVE swoony accented guys!! What a great post!
LOVE accents! They’re just so, so intriguing. Thank you for the opportunity to win. Loving the new blog!!
Oh, how I looooveee accents with all my heart. Chris Hemsworth, James McAvoy….my heart swoons.
I want to watch Penelope again, just for James McAvoy (plus, it’s one of my favs!) Oh, and Richard Armitage in North and South. Don’t know what he’s saying half the time, but he could talk to me ALL DAY!
I love Chris Hemsworth. And Wesley (Who doesn’t? Its INCONCIEVABLE!) But scottish accents and well, any from the UK will do it for me!
Oh, James McAvoy – I loved him in Wanted!!! Something about a geek turned badboy – oh yeah!!! Nice choices with Chris and Ewan, too!!
Oh, Wesley… 🙂
Southern Accents, good gracious. A good Southern drawl and I’m gone.
I love love accents! My favs would probably be Scottish and Australian.
Accents are so awesome! they make me melt! Especially the british ones best!
Love British accents!
I love accents… especially Australian. I think there is just something about a unique accent, something about it being different from “the norm”. I work in customer service, and every so often someone with a southern accent or an Australian or English accent will call *swoon*
I love a posh British accent the best, and as for books? I want them all! Sweet Peril, by Wendy Higgins, Opal by JLAs, Greta and the Goblin King…all of them. Lol;)
Sean Connery could read a menu to me and I would sigh
I love this post! Gotta love men with accents! 🙂
Yes to accents…with tattoos too! 🙂 Yes, lovely mixture.
I have a problem!!!! the guy i like has a really strong Irish accent and i can’t under stand what he’s saying!!!!!
