Seize the Moment: A.M. Rose Shares A Time She Faced Her Fears and Won
A few years ago, my family was lucky enough to take a cruise one summer. I didn’t get to travel much as a kid so I always think it’s special when I get to take my kids to new, exciting places. One of the stops was in Honduras and my older son adamantly wanted to go zip lining. Now, I wouldn’t say I’m scared of heights necessarily, but I’d say I’m scared of falling to my death from very high places. But like I mentioned before I wanted this trip to be special for my kids, so I agreed we could do this.
Once we got to the port, we took this old van (with no AC or windows that could roll down) with a group of strangers up a dirt road to our location. To make it all worse, when we arrived at the place to go zip lining, we had to wait over an hour for our turn because they were backed up. Which means I had an hour with my harness digging into my legs and the sweat building in my armpits waiting to potentially fall to my death.
I was seriously thinking about chickening out as we hiked to the top of the hill, and then again when our tour guide decided my family would be the first to go, oh, and we would all go together. My brain was screaming, “What are you crazy? Do you know how much weight four people is?” “And that rope isn’t very thick.” But the look of excitement on my kids’ faces was all I needed to stay quiet. And I’m glad I did.
The view was spectacular, their screams of joy and the cool breeze whipping in my face was better than anything I could’ve ever imagined. If I would’ve let my fears take over I never would’ve gotten to experience that. So my choice to seize the moment is one I hope my kids will never forget, because I sure as hell won’t.
